CHIANG RAI, Thailand — The global diving community is grieving the passing of renowned Canadian technical diver Erik Brown, who died at the age of 44.
A native of Langley, British Columbia, Brown gained international prominence for his critical operational role in the high-stakes 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue. When 12 members of the Wild Boars youth football team and their coach became trapped inside Thailand's flooded Tham Luang Nang Non cave system, Brown traveled to Chiang Rai to join the elite international rescue task force. Over nine days, Brown completed seven demanding underwater missions, logging 63 total hours inside zero-visibility flooded passages. He was responsible for transporting vital air cylinders, setting up staging equipment, and laying and maintaining crucial guide ropes that enabled primary rescue divers to safely extract all 13 survivors.
Official Status and International Recognition
Diving organizations, friends, and family announced Brown's passing on September 26, 2026, though specific medical circumstances, location, and cause of death remain undisclosed.
Following the historic 2018 rescue, Brown was awarded Canada's Medal of Bravery in 2019 for repeatedly risking his life under extreme hazard. His contributions were also recognized by the Royal Thai Government, which conferred upon him the Most Admirable Order of the Direkgunabhorn (First Class). A leader in technical diving, Brown co-founded Team Blue Immersion in Dahab, Egypt, and established Hydronauts Diving on Koh Tao, Thailand, training generations of cave and open-circuit technical divers. Formal announcements regarding public memorial services will be released by his family and diving colleagues.
Community Tributes and Diving Legacy
News of Erik Brown’s death has prompted widespread tributes across Canada, Thailand, and the global diving industry.
Fellow divers, former students, and international expedition partners remembered Brown for his humility, professional composure, and exceptional skill under extreme operational pressure. Sincere condolences continue to be extended to his family, friends, and colleagues across the international technical diving community.
