WELLINGTON, New Zealand — The Australasian and global entertainment production community is mourning the sudden passing of Nicholas “Nic” Balkum, a master rigger and production specialist, who suffered a fatal medical event on Friday morning, September 25, 2026, at TSB Arena in Wellington.

Emergency responders—including Wellington Free Ambulance, Fire and Emergency New Zealand, and New Zealand Police—were dispatched to the waterfront venue at approximately 10:15 a.m. First responders and venue personnel with Wellington Venues provided immediate emergency medical assistance, but Balkum died at the scene.

In 2019, he co-founded the Wellington-based technical crewing company YOOCrew and served closely with Theatrical Solutions. At the time of his death, Balkum was serving as Head Rigger for WOW.
