Olson Dies Following Single-Vehicle Crash on North Tongass Highway in Ketchikan

KETCHIKAN, Alaska — A 78-year-old Ketchikan resident, John Olson, died Saturday following a single-vehicle crash along the North Tongass Highway near South Point Higgins.

Shortly after 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2026, Alaska State Troopers and North Tongass EMS were dispatched to the North Tongass Highway after receiving reports of a serious roadway departure. According to trooper reports, Olson was traveling southbound when his vehicle veered off the roadway. First responders arrived at the scene and provided initial medical care to Olson, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was believed to have been wearing a seatbelt. Paramedics transported him to PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center for emergency treatment. Despite medical intervention, Olson succumbed to his injuries at the hospital later that evening with his next of kin present.
