Early Life and Military Service

Born on April 5, 1945, in Johnson City, Tennessee, Jim was the son of the late George Mason Barnett and Gladys Ohelia Tipton Barnett. A lifelong native of Washington County, he spent his youth establishing deep ties across the East Tennessee region.

Demonstrating a strong sense of duty to his community and country, Barnett served honorably in the Tennessee Army National Guard during his early adulthood.

Career at Raytheon and Community Impact
Following his military service, Barnett embarked on a distinguished career with defense technology contractor Raytheon. He dedicated more than 35 years to the company, working his way through the ranks to serve as a Maintenance Supervisor until his formal retirement in 2008.

Known affectionally by friends and colleagues as "Jim" or "Barney," he was remembered by peers for his practical problem-solving skills, strong work ethic, and steadfast leadership on the job floor.

Funeral Services and Tributes
Barnett is survived by his devoted family members, who extended special gratitude to medical caregivers from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Gentiva Hospice, Visiting Angels, and family members who assisted in his care during his illness.

Graveside Service: Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at 1:00 P.M.

Location: Historic Section of Mountain Home National Cemetery (53 Memorial Avenue, Mountain Home, TN 37684)

Officiant: Chaplain W. Randall Holmes

Friends and members of the community planning to attend are invited to gather at the cemetery by 12:50 P.M. on Tuesday to pay their final respects.
