CHICAGO, Illinois — A veteran Chicago 911 dispatcher was killed in the early morning hours of Friday after being caught in gunfire while driving in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the city’s South Side. As reported by local news outlets, including CBS News Chicago, 50-year-old Natalia Rodriguez was fatally shot along the 4500 block of South Wood Street.
Late-Night Shooting and Vehicle Crash According to preliminary investigation bulletins from the Chicago Police Department, the shooting occurred at approximately 12:17 a.m. Officers established that Ms. Rodriguez was operating a silver SUV heading southbound on Wood Street when multiple gunshots were fired into her vehicle. Sustaining direct gunshot wounds, Ms. Rodriguez lost control of the vehicle, which subsequently collided with a parked SUV along the curb.
Hospital Transport, First Responder Tributes, and Investigation Paramedics with the Chicago Fire Department arrived at the scene shortly after the crash and performed emergency lifesaving interventions. Emergency crews transported Ms. Rodriguez to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where attending medical staff pronounced her deceased. Colleagues at the Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) remembered Ms. Rodriguez as a dedicated, compassionate, and sweet dispatcher who served as a critical lifeline for citizens in distress across Chicago. Area One detectives secured the crash corridor and are currently reviewing surveillance footage to identify the shooters, as no arrests have been announced and the investigation remains active.
