CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — A violent encounter with a law enforcement officer in west Charlotte has led to a major multi-jurisdictional investigation connecting two brothers to nearly 200 criminal offenses across Mecklenburg and York counties. As reported by local media outlets in Charlotte, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) announced Friday, September 11, 2026, that 28-year-old Dionte Antonio McCracking and 27-year-old Jatarius Damond McCracking are facing 190 combined charges stemming from a widespread crime spree that began in late July.

Enderly Road Shooting and Kings Ridge Drive Standoff

According to official incident reports from CMPD, the sequence of events escalated early Wednesday morning, September 9, when officers responded shortly after 12:20 a.m. to a report of suspicious activity on the 1200 block of Enderly Road. The responding officer encountered Dionte McCracking near a stolen vehicle. During a physical struggle, Dionte produced a firearm and shot the officer in the shoulder before fleeing. Emergency services transported the wounded officer to a local hospital, where CMPD confirmed he remains in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.

Following an intensive investigation involving CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) and federal partners, officers located Dionte McCracking at an apartment complex on Kings Ridge Drive. After he barricaded himself inside for several hours, CMPD SWAT and K-9 units took him into custody. He was initially charged with attempted murder on a law enforcement officer, assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Comprehensive Crime Spree and Ongoing Legal Proceedings

Investigators with CMPD's Crime Gun Suppression Team subsequently linked both McCracking brothers to a broad network of criminal activities operating since July 27. Law enforcement officials detailed that the charges cover a wide array of offenses, including vehicle thefts, commercial break-ins, property burglaries, and multiple residential shootings into occupied homes across the region. Jatarius McCracking had been taken into custody on September 2 on separate warrants for stolen firearms and vehicle thefts. Both brothers are currently held without bond in the Mecklenburg County Jail as prosecutors prepare formal court proceedings.
