The tragic outcome followed a severe swimming accident on Saturday, September 26, off the coast of Hermosa Beach, California. Dr. Persse sustained a catastrophic spinal cord injury while in the water and was pulled to shore in cardiac arrest. Bystanders and Los Angeles County first responders initiated immediate CPR and advanced resuscitation protocols at the scene before emergency crews transported him in critical condition to a local California trauma center. Despite intensive medical interventions, he succumbed to the extent of his injuries two days later.
