Troy Fire Department crews responded to urgent 911 calls reporting an active structure fire at a multi-story home with occupants trapped inside. Arriving firefighters encountered heavy smoke and working flames throughout the structure. Firefighters immediately entered the burning home and rescued 37-year-old Dominick Rizzo Jr., his 39-year-old fiancée Alicia Ruefle, and their 11-year-old daughter, Abigail Rizzo. All three sustained life-threatening injuries and received immediate resuscitation efforts on scene before emergency medical personnel transported them to local hospitals. Despite intensive medical interventions, Dominick Rizzo Jr. and Alicia Ruefle succumbed to their injuries shortly after rescue, while Abigail passed away from severe fire-related trauma at the hospital.
The couple’s 13-year-old son, Dominick Rizzo III, survived the blaze by escaping through a second-story window, where he was assisted to safety with help from nearby Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) students and neighbors.

The Troy Fire Department, Troy Police Department, and state fire prevention investigators have launched a comprehensive inquiry into the cause and origin of the fire.
