Carol Geiger Killed in Head-On Crash on Highway 421 in North Carolina

ZIONVILLE, North Carolina — A 67-year-old Shady Valley, Tennessee resident, Carol Geiger, was killed in a head-on collision along U.S. Highway 421 in Watauga County, North Carolina, on Monday morning, September 28, 2026.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Geiger was driving a Hyundai Kona northbound along U.S. Highway 421 near Mabel School Road in Zionville. Emergency reports state that a Ford F-250 pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction crossed the highway centerline and collided head-on with Geiger's vehicle. First responders and emergency medical personnel arrived quickly at the scene, but Geiger sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.

Official Status and Criminal Investigation

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol leading the investigation has filed formal criminal charges against the driver of the pickup truck.

Troopers identified the driver of the Ford F-250 as 64-year-old Henry Bontrager. Following preliminary crash reconstruction and on-scene evidence collection, authorities charged Bontrager with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, careless and reckless driving, and driving without a license. State troopers noted that speed and impairment are not believed to be contributing factors in the crossover collision.
