PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — Authorities in Pembroke Pines are investigating the tragic deaths of 62-year-old retired police sergeant John Baker and his wife, 59-year-old Joanne Baker. Officers with the Pembroke Pines Police Department and emergency paramedics responded to a 911 call on Monday morning, September 21, 2026, in the 8300 block of Pine Drive. Upon entering the residence, emergency personnel located both individuals unresponsive, and both were pronounced deceased at the scene.

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — Authorities in Pembroke Pines are investigating the tragic deaths of 62-year-old retired police sergeant John Baker and his wife, 59-year-old Joanne Baker. Officers with the Pembroke Pines Police Department and emergency paramedics responded to a 911 call on Monday morning, September 21, 2026, in the 8300 block of Pine Drive. Upon entering the residence, emergency personnel located both individuals unresponsive, and both were pronounced deceased at the scene.


Ongoing Investigation and Preliminary Findings
According to preliminary findings released by law enforcement, investigators believe Joanne fatally shot John before taking her own life in an apparent murder-suicide. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform autopsies to make the official determinations regarding the cause and manner of death for both individuals. The Pembroke Pines Police Department stated that the investigation remains active as detectives work to establish the complete sequence of events.

Community Impact and Tributes to Decades of Service
The loss has sent waves of grief through the Pembroke Pines community and local law enforcement, where John served for nearly 28 years after joining the department in 1994. A founding member of the department's Crisis Response Team, Baker was widely known for his community involvement with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Special Compass, and the Special Olympics Torch Run, as well as his perseverance following a severe on-duty motorcycle crash in 2019.
