Residents of Richland, West Richland, and the wider Tri-Cities region of Washington are keeping a close watch on wildfire activity near Benton City after the Second Street Fire spread across a large area of Benton County.

According to reports published on September 25, the wildfire had grown to approximately 1,149 acres. The fire was still listed as active in updates available on September 26, with no confirmed containment figure reported. 
Wildfire Prompts Evacuation Orders Near Benton City
Benton County Emergency Services issued Level 3, or “GO NOW,” evacuation orders for communities threatened by the fire. The affected areas included a subdivision accessed through North Valley Drive Way and Pear Drive, nearby streets, and Kiona Village Community Mobile Home Park. Residents in the designated evacuation zones were instructed to leave immediately. 
The fire has been reported burning through grass, brush, and urban forested areas, posing a threat to nearby homes and infrastructure. State fire mobilization was authorized to support the response and provide additional firefighting resources. 
Road Closures Affect Travel Across the Region
The wildfire response also led to several road closures, including sections of Interstate 82, State Route 224, Kennedy Road, and Keene Road. These closures may affect travel between Benton City and other parts of the Tri-Cities area.
Drivers are advised to avoid affected routes, follow directions from emergency personnel, and check for updated road information before travelling.

A temporary evacuation shelter was reported at Ki-Be High School, located at 1205 Horne Drive in Benton City. Residents who have been ordered to evacuate should follow official instructions and confirm current shelter arrangements before travelling.
