Authorities in Peoria County, Illinois, are investigating a fatal shooting and the death of an infant following two connected incidents on the morning of September 25, 2026.
The investigation began at approximately 6:09 a.m., when emergency responders received a report of a vehicle fire near the 3500 block of Yorkshire Drive in Peoria County. The initial report placed the fire near Abby Circle.
According to local news reports citing the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office, deputies located the burning vehicle and conducted a welfare check at a nearby residence associated with it.
Inside the residence, authorities found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
After firefighters extinguished the vehicle fire, emergency personnel discovered an infant deceased inside the vehicle. Authorities confirmed the infant was the child of the woman found with the gunshot wound.
Two other children were found unharmed inside the residence. Officials have not released further identifying details about the children in the reports reviewed.
Investigators said preliminary findings indicated the vehicle had been driven away from the area of the shooting before crashing and catching fire. Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the fire, including whether it was deliberately set.
The investigation led authorities to identify 24-year-old Jeremiah Duncan as a suspect. Initial reports urged members of the public not to approach him and to contact emergency services if they saw him.
