US strikes Iranian launchers on island in Strait of Hormuz
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps vows to respond after US forces struck two launchers on Larak Island.
US forces have struck two Iranian launchers on Iran's Larak Island in the first military action in more than a month, a US official has said.
Forces with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were observed preparing to launch rockets with sea mines into the strait, according to a US official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
In a statement carried by Iran's state broadcaster the IRGC said the attack killed and wounded several Iranian fighters and civilians, and vowed to respond and punish those responsible.
The statement said the attack would "result in punishment of the aggressor".
The IRGC did not provide a precise casualty toll.
Last week, US President Donald Trump said all mines had been detonated or removed from the international waters of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran had been told that any ship or boat placing new mines would be destroyed.
The last known US strikes on Iran were in late July.
The war reached a stalemate in recent weeks, with Washington threatening to impose costly sanctions on countries that support Iran.
