Abia LGA Chairmen’s tenure won’t terminate in November 2026 – Governor Otti

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti says the tenure of the current Chairmen and Councillors in the 17 LGAs of the State will end in 2028, not in November 2026.

The Governor made the explanation on Thursday during his media chat with Abia people, while reacting to the trending speculation on the fate of the Executive Chairmen and their Councillors.

According to the Governor, the former system where the tenure of elected local government executives lasted for two years, has been amended through the Act of the Abia Parliament.

He dismissed speculation about the tenure of the local government Chairmen and their Councillors, noting that the law can not be applied retrospectively, having been amended before the November 2, 2024 chairmanship and councillorship polls.

“Before the election, we went to the the House of Assembly to amend that law and the House of Assembly gave the local government Mayor’s and their Councillors four years and that was even before the election,” Governor Otti said.

On the call for the implementation of the Abia State anti-open grazing law, Governor Otti said the law has been sent to him for study, noting that he would soon come up with modalities for its implementation.

He further expressed worry on the rising cases of cancer, kidney failure, brain tumour and stroke among young Nigerians but advised Abia people to take preventative measures against the ugly development, by being mindful of what they consume.
