Emi Buendía had Villa’s best chance, skewing the ball over from a few yards out after George Hemmings’ cut-back. He trudges away, head down, having come off with 15 minutes to go. Unai Emery’s substitutions did not have much of a positive impact at all, perhaps the opposite.
Sergej Jakirovic walks on to the pitch with a wry smile on his face after another job well done, another clean sheet and another point on the road to Premier League survival. It’s seven on the board already.
Full time: Hull 0-0 Aston Villa
It’s as you were: Aston Villa have not scored this season and Hull have not conceded. The home supporters rise to applaud their side for another gutsy display.
90+2 min: Barkley dallies on the ball inside his own box after Giles marauds forward again down the left. After so much possession in this second half, it’s Villa who are holding on for dear life!
90 min: Huge chance for Hull! Oh, Oli McBurnie … Giles pings a cross into the box and McBurnie, on the run, swings his right foot at it and doesn’t get the connection required!
Three added minutes.
Oli McBurnie shanks a great chance wide! Photograph: Craig Brough/Action Images/Reuters89 min: Chance for Hull! Thomas drives towards the edge of the box and finds McBurnie, who lays it off to Cho. The strike is low and Suzuki keeps it out.
88 min: McGinn’s delivery is poor and drifts to the back post where Tzolakis can pluck it out of the sky.
87 min: Hull are rock solid. Cho is providing fresh legs on the right wing. He bumps into Garnacho as Villa win a throw. McGinn suckers Herrington into conceding a free-kick on the edge of the area.
85 min: Abraham and Wan-Bissaka come on, replacing Jackson and Cash. There will be no debut for £47m signing Ibrahim Mbaye.
84 min: Emery loses his rag with Villa’s backroom staff when substitutes Tammy Abraham and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are not ready to come on with the ball out of play. It’s getting a bit tense.
82 min: Ruggeri wins a corner as his cross deflects behind. It’s worked into the box and falls for Mings, whose half-volley is blocked before it gets anywhere dangerous.
Hull hand a debut to Mohamed-Ali Cho and Jens-Hjertø-Dahl as Belloumi and Gourna-Douath make way.
80 min: McBurnie almost picks Barkley’s pocket in the Villa half but Emery’s team knock it around some more without looking very threatening.
78 min: Another spell of cautious Villa possession. Ruggeri and Garnacho looks a bit of an awkward combination down the left.
76 min: Emery turns to his bench for the first time. Alejandro Garnacho, centre-back Matteo Ruggeri and Brazilian winger Alysson are on. Hemmings, Maatsen and a very frustrated Buendía are off.
74 min: Suzuki’s ball into midfield is cut out by Slater on halfway but Belloumi gives it away. Kamara and Buendía combine well before Villa win a free-kick.
72 min: Another Hull change – Lucas Herrington comes on for Mendy on his 19th birthday. Can they keep a third clean sheet in a row? McBurnie does well to get contact on a long throw but no one is there for Hull to convert at the back post.
70 min: Thomas is playing down the middle for Hull, with McBurnie moving out wide on the left. Defensive duties are first and foremost for both for now.
68 min: A Buendía free-kick from deep is flicked away rather than on by a leaping Mings and Maatsen has to recycle the ball.
Belloumi hits the bar for Hull!
66 min: What a strike! Norton-Cuffy wins a corner. Belloumi takes it, gets it straight back and curls a left-footed shot that pings back off the crossbar at the far post. Just not enough dip.
More dip needed! Mohamed Belloumi’s shot beats Suzuki, but not the woodwork. Photograph: Craig Brough/Action Images/Reuters64 min: Buendía turns well into space in the Hull half. He releases the ball to Jackson on the left but the Villa striker isn’t ready for it and Ajayi can mop up unchallenged.
Hull replace Stroud and Coyle with two new signings – winger Sorba Thomas from Stoke and wing-back Brooke Norton-Cuffy from Genoa.
62 min: Play stops for a moment as Maatsen takes a few sharp breaths after a ball in the groin. When it resumes, Giles drifts a cross into the box but Belloumi is flagged for offside.
60 min: Mendy takes a chance with a shove in the back of Cash in the Hull box. Cash went down easily but I’ve definitely seen them given.
58 min: Some nice footwork by Jackson on halfway sets Hemmings off down the left. Egan bounds across for Hull and takes man and ball with a hefty but fair sliding challenge. What a sight.
56 min: Cash wins a free-kick in his own half with a bit of an Ayling flop under the challenge of Stroud.
54 min: What a miss! Hemmings does superbly down the Villa left, breezing past Coyle and laying it on a plate for Buendía who, eight yards out, clears the crossbar by some distance. It’s bobbling a little bit, but that’s no excuse.
52 min: McBurnie gives Stroud an earful as the Swedish winger turns Cash but opts to fire into the side-netting instead of cutting it back. He will not be doing that again.
50 min: McBurnie leaves Kamara on the deck on halfway and releases Stroud down the Hull left. Stroud spots McBurnie arriving from deep and the striker’s ambitious first-time finish, with the ball coming across his body, fades further and further wide.
At the other end, Buendía and Jackson combine on the edge of the box. McGinn beats Tzolakis to the ball in the box but digs it up and other the bar. It’s a very good chance.
48 min: Jackson holds the ball up better this time and sends it inside to Kamara. Villa ponder about what to do next for a minute or so and Hull are happy to watch them. They are still yet to concede this season.
46 min: Jackson surrenders the ball meekly to Ajayi, who shields it out for a Hull goal-kick.
The players are back out, neither manager has made a change and Hull get the ball rolling once more …
Half-time reading comes from around the grounds …
Half-time: Hull 0-0 Aston Villa
After some appeals for a Villa penalty as Mendy nudges Jackson out of the way of Maatsen’s cross and Belloumi wastes a delivery at the other end, Michael Oliver blows for the break. Jackson had the best chance, with his head, inside two minutes. Barkley has tested Tzolakis as well, but Hull look good for at least a point so far.
45 min: Cash can’t keep a Jackson pass from rolling out for a goal-kick. One minute added.
