Championship roundup: Bristol City add to Burnley’s woes, West Ham beat Derby

Nicky Hayen has told his under-fire Burnley players they need to dig deep to come through “a really difficult situation” after a 2-1 defeat at home by Bristol City left them rock bottom of the Championship.

The Turf Moor crowd vented their anger – most vehemently towards the owner, Alan Pace – after Aaron Ramsey’s 56th-minute opener for the Clarets was overturned by an 82nd-minute header from Rob Dickie and a brilliant stoppage-time strike from City substitute Yu Hirakawa.

Hayen has collected just two points from his five league games since being appointed in July after Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League, but the embattled Belgian remains adamant he can turn things round.

“I completely understand the fans, they’re frustrated and disappointed,” said Hayen. “Of course, it’s not nice to experience this, but I understand and I can accept it. The only thing we can do is keep on fighting back and showing resilience.”

Two late goals underscored West Ham’s second home victory in the space of five days and a 3-0 win over Derby that was less decisive than the scoreline suggests. After leading by an early Joël Piroe goal, Nuno Espírito Santo’s side lost their fluidity as the game progressed and were grateful to the substitutes Edvin Austbø and Mohamadou Kanté, each of whom scored their first goal for the club.

The Foxes, like their opponents relegated from the Championship last season, were looking to build on their first league win in midweek, but fell behind to an early goal from Mark Harris.

Sheffield Wednesday picked up their fourth win from five games to sit top after beating Peterborough 2-1 through a 79th-minute goal from defender Yan Valery.

Reading's manager, Leam Richardson, said his side put in a better performance in their 3-1 victory over Blackpool than in the 5-0 rout of Mansfield three days earlier. Goals from George Earthy and Kyreece Lisbie, his first for the club, gave Reading a 2-0 lead early in the second half. Although Leighton Clarkson reduced the deficit with 10 minutes left, Jacob Brown struck in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

“I enjoyed that,” Richardson said. “Full credit goes to the players. On the back of Wednesday [Mansfield game], I thought that we played better today than we did then, to be honest."

Huddersfield are a point behind, having been held to a 1-1 draw at home by Notts County.

At the other end of the table, Wigan slumped to the bottom on the back of a 4-0 home defeat against Stockport, who sit third on nine points alongside Bradford after their 1-0 home win over Mansfield.

MK Dons fought back from 2-0 down at half-time to draw 3-3 at strugglers Wycombe, while Stevenage ran out 5-1 winners at Barnsley, where Daniel Kemp scored twice.

Luton could not make their superiority count as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Leyton Orient. Jamie Donley, a former Orient loanee, scored his first Town goal after 25 minutes. Luton should have doubled their lead, Nakhi Wells scuffing a shot at the keeper, and Orient made them pay in the 34th minute, Jaze Kabia finding the top corner after Mads Juel Andersen was caught out.

Plymouth raced to a first away victory as they triumphed 3-2 at winless Doncaster. Goals from Will Evans, Bim Pepple and Caleb Watts earned a comfortable win for Tom Cleverley’s side, who surged clear after an Alfie May penalty had drawn Doncaster level early in the second half. Sean Grehan headed in a consolation effort deep in added time.

Burton's head coach, Gary Bowyer, Bowyer praised his players’ determination late on when behind with Curtis Tilt showing a never-say-die attitude to bundle home for a 2-2 draw despite strong protestations from Cambridge of handball.

Bowyer said: “The spirit and fight we showed was very pleasing. Tilty has won the free-kick in the first place and then got on the end of a wonderful delivery from Charlie Webster.”

Nuno said: “Of course we wanted to end the game sooner, but in the end I was so happy for the players who came off the bench, they brought energy and scored to help the team.”

Will Lankshear’s seventh goal in seven matches gave Middlesbrough a 1-0 victory against previously unbeaten QPR. The striker has been a revelation since his summer move from Tottenham and his predatory first-half finish at Loftus Road took Boro up to second. Boro led at half-time in their previous two away games this season and did not manage to win, but this time they held on.

Lyndon Dykes scored his first two goals for injury-hit Millwall as they returned to winning ways in some style with a 4-0 victory over Bolton at the Den. The Lions made light of the fact they have 11 first-team players currently unavailable – and that their last two games ended in heavy defeat – as they inflicted a third loss in a row on the Trotters.

A late burst of three goals in nine minutes gave the final score an emphatic look, while both teams finished with 10 men after the Millwall midfielder Jenson Metcalfe and Bolton captain Josh Sheehan were sent off for violent conduct.

Goals from Anthony Musaba, Mohamed Touré and Mathias Kvistgaarden earned them the three points, with Patrick Bamford scoring for the hosts.

Jimmy-Jay Morgan’s fifth goal of the season extended West Brom’s bright start with a 1-0 home win against Watford. The 20-year-old, a £1.3m summer signing, scored in the 36th minute for his third Championship strike and first at the Hawthorns to extend Albion’s unbeaten home record to 10 matches. It was a game of two halves, with Morgan denied twice and Aune Heggebø once in the first half, while Watford missed two chances after the break. Watford are now winless away from home in their past nine trips, since February.

Mikkel Ladefoged scored his first goal in English football to secure Lincoln a deserved late point against Southampton as they battled to a 1-1 draw with one of the Championship promotion favourites. Welington had also scored his first goal for the Saints on the stroke of half-time and his thunderbolt looked likely to be good enough for the points at Sincil Bank before the Imps’ record signing struck at the death.

Of Ladefoged, his head coach Tom Shaw said: “We’ve got a player who’s a real problem in the penalty area and we’ve got to help him and he’s got to help himself in getting up to speed and understanding what we want, but he’s got the physicality and mentality to do that,” said Shaw. “He’s a real nuisance.”

Barnet drew 3-3 at Chesterfield, where Kabongo Tshimanga had put them ahead again late on before Joel Randall headed in a stoppage-time equaliser for the home side.

Crewe maintained their unbeaten start to the campaign but had to settle for a point after Alex Newby hit back to secure a 1-1 draw for York. Luke Offord headed the Railwaymen in front from an early set piece, but Lee Bell’s side failed to capitalise on their momentum. Tranmere are fourth after a 2-0 win over Oldham.

Charlie Caton scored a double to take his tally to four for the season as Accrington celebrated their first win of the campaign with a 3-2 victory over Crawley. Fleetwood beat strugglers Shrewsbury 2-0, Rochdale finished with 10 men in a 4-1 home defeat by Gillingham and Port Vale remain bottom after losing 1-0 at Salford. Exeter and Walsall played out a 0-0 draw at St James Park.

Northampton beat Newport 1-0 for their first win of the season in front of their prospective new owner, Alexandre Pato. The former Milan and Brazil striker is part of a consortium in talks to buy a stake in the East Midlands club and he watched on at Sixfields as Joe O’Brien-Whitmarsh’s superb late strike sealed all three points.

David Artell warned his Grimsby team to stop giving away soft goals after watching them battle back from 2-0 down to claim a point at Cheltenham.

Goals from Charlie McCann and Andreas Weimann put the home side 2-0 up before half-time. But the substitute Mark Shelton sparked the response for David Artell’s side and Kieran Green headed in a late equaliser to make it four successive draws for the Mariners.

Stoke cruised to a 4-0 win by dismantling 10-man Charlton with a ruthless home performance. The Addicks had not lost a league game this season before their visit to the Bet365 Stadium, but two goals from the debutant Justin Devenny and strikes from Ethan Galbraith and George Hirst enabled the Potters to put the contest to bed before the break.

The second-half substitute Danny McNamara was sent off for two careless yellow cards in the space of three minutes as the afternoon spiralled spectacularly out of control for the visitors. Booked first for pulling back Eric Bocat, the full-back was dismissed in the 50th minute after berating the referee, Robert Madley.

Callum Lang bagged an early double as Preston edged past local rivals Blackburn 2-1 at Deepdale. The 27-year-old opened the scoring with a poacher’s finish in the ninth minute before nodding in a 28th-minute second.

After his side held on for their first win, Paul Heckingbottom said: “The best thing about us today is that spirit and the determination to see the game out.

“[Blackburn] are a bright team. You could see probably the start of the second half shows what they’re all about. They have a lot of rotation, drop players outside, good shape to keep the ball.”
