Archaeologists have uncovered a tomb with the remains of 38 people and gold and copper objects at the ancient Chan Chan site in northern Peru.

Archaeologists have uncovered a collective tomb containing the remains of 38 people at Chan Chan, a vast pre-Hispanic adobe citadel in northern Peru. Aerial footage shows teams working among the remains and excavating the site.

The tomb was discovered a few weeks ago at the archaeological complex near Trujillo, around 500 kilometres north of Lima. The remains were found alongside copper and gold objects, adding to the evidence being studied at the ancient complex.

Chan Chan was the capital of the Chimú civilisation, which flourished along Peru's northern coast before the Inca conquest. Archaeologists continue to investigate the tomb and its contents as they seek to learn more about the people buried there.

The complex covers a large area, with the excavation work and archaeological remains visible from above.
