MACON, Georgia — The Macon community is seeking answers following the sudden in-custody death of 27-year-old Brandon Joe McCoy, who was found unresponsive inside his cell at the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center early Friday morning, October 2, 2026.


According to preliminary reports from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, detention deputies conducting routine cell checks discovered McCoy unconscious at approximately 12:28 a.m. Sheriff's personnel and facility medical staff immediately initiated CPR and emergency lifesaving protocols. Despite prolonged resuscitation efforts, McCoy was pronounced dead at the facility. McCoy was being held at the detention center on pending charges, including theft by receiving, fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement, and obstruction of an officer. His next of kin has been officially notified by law enforcement representatives.

Official Status and Independent Inquiry
In accordance with standard protocol for deaths occurring within correctional facilities, independent and internal inquiries have been formally initiated.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was called to lead the death investigation and will perform a full autopsy and forensic toxicology examination to determine the exact cause and manner of death. Concurrently, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office of Professional Standards and Internal Affairs is conducting an internal administrative review of cell monitoring logs, supervision protocols, and medical response timelines. Authorities have confirmed that no obvious physical injuries were immediately reported, and further public statements remain pending formal findings from the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office.
