SARDIS, Mississippi — A fatal early morning shooting on Sunday, September 27, 2026, claimed the life of 23-year-old Gary Walls Jr. and left another person injured in Sardis, Mississippi.
Deputies with the Panola County Sheriff’s Office responded at approximately 4:30 a.m. to Highway 51 near Dewberry Street to assist the Sardis Police Department following emergency 911 calls reporting gunfire. Upon arrival, emergency responders located Gary Walls Jr. suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite life-saving efforts by first responders, Walls succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. A second victim, identified as Janiya Fonville, also sustained gunshot injuries and was transported to Panola Medical Center, where medical staff confirmed she was in stable condition.
Official Status and Homicide Investigation
The Sardis Police Department has opened an active homicide investigation in coordination with the Panola County Sheriff’s Office and the Panola County Coroner's Office.
Detectives and crime scene technicians processed the Highway 51 area for ballistics evidence and are reviewing surrounding surveillance footage to determine the sequence of events leading up to the gunfire.
