Born on August 8, 1946, in South Dayton, New York, Bergey was raised in western New York, where he began his football career at Pine Valley High School before continuing at UCLA.

Official Status and Career Overview

Following his collegiate career at UCLA, Bergey was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 14th round (354th overall) of the 1971 NFL Draft. During the 1971 season, he appeared as a defensive end for both the Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Oilers. Bergey subsequently transitioned to the Canadian Football League (CFL), playing for the Toronto Argonauts during the 1972 and 1973 seasons. He returned to the United States to compete in the World Football League (WFL), playing for the Portland Storm in 1974 and the Portland Thunder in 1975.
