The crash occurred shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday, September 24, near the intersection of Bellingrath and Peary roads. According to Mobile Police, an Amtrak train traveling toward Mobile collided with a vehicle at the railroad crossing. Investigators reported that the crossing arms were down at the time of the collision.
A family friend, Rev. Leonard Whitfield, identified James Cobb as one of the people killed. Whitfield told FOX10 News that he had known Cobb since birth and described him as a respectful person who came from a close family. He said he had spoken with Cobb roughly 45 minutes before the crash.
Whitfield also said Cobb’s fiancée died in the collision. Her name has circulated in connection with the incident as Suzanne O’Shea, but authorities had not independently confirmed her identity in the reports reviewed for this article.
The collision left extensive debris around the railroad crossing. According to FOX10, part of the vehicle remained alongside the tracks while another portion was carried farther down the railroad line.

In February 2026, 31-year-old Brittany Williams and her 8-year-old daughter were killed after their vehicle went around the crossing arms and was struck by an Amtrak train.
