The South Austin community is mourning the reported death of Dmario Antonie Jones, who died following a shooting incident at a residence on Virtus Bend.
According to the Austin Police Department, officers responded to a burglary report in the 200 block of Virtus Bend at approximately 3:51 a.m. on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. Officers found Jones suffering from apparent gunshot wounds when they arrived.
Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services attempted life-saving measures at the scene. Jones was pronounced deceased at approximately 4:10 a.m.
Police said their preliminary investigation determined Jones entered a residence and proceeded into a bedroom. Investigators said he was shot by the homeowner during the reported burglary.
The homeowner was interviewed by homicide detectives and cooperated with the investigation. Police said the homeowner was released and no charges had been filed at the time of the department’s September 24 update. The investigation remains ongoing. (City of Austin)
Jones was born May 9, 2002, according to the Austin Police Department’s identification of the deceased. He was 24 years old at the time of his death. (City of Austin)
