Angela Stribling Obituary: Washington, D.C., Pioneering BET Host and Radio Personality Dies at 58

Angela Marie Stribling built a career across television, radio, music, and voiceover work. She became known to audiences through her work with Black Entertainment Television, where she helped shape the network's early entertainment programming.

She spent approximately four years hosting BET's entertainment news program, Screen Scene, alongside fellow broadcaster Melvin Lindsey. She later helped launch BET Jazz, hosting programs including Jazz Central with legendary musicians Ramsey Lewis and Lou Rawls, as well as BET Jazz Discovery and BET Jazz Scene. 
A Familiar Voice on Washington Radio
Stribling also made a lasting contribution to Washington, D.C., radio. She became the first woman to host WHUR's Original Quiet Storm, a programme associated with the station's influential tradition of late-night music broadcasting.
She later hosted Pillow Talk with Angela, connecting with listeners through music, relationships, and personal conversations. Her distinctive voice also featured in national radio and television campaigns, extending her work beyond the Washington area. 
Jazz Music and Other Work
Beyond broadcasting, Stribling was a classically trained vocalist who pursued a career as a jazz singer. She performed internationally and shared stages with celebrated musicians, including Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan.
Her professional experience also included television reporting, acting, live events, and voiceover projects. She appeared in the 1992 Eddie Murphy film The Distinguished Gentleman, adding another dimension to her career in entertainment. 
Tributes From Colleagues and Fans
Following news of her passing, tributes came from former colleagues and members of the broadcasting community.
Veteran broadcaster Donnie Simpson remembered Stribling as a talented media personality whose greatest strength was her personality. He spoke about the grief of losing her while expressing gratitude for the time they had shared.
Former BET colleague Ed Gordon also paid tribute to her, recalling their friendship and her contributions to television, radio, music, and film. WHUR remembered her as a valued member of its broadcasting family whose warmth and kindness touched listeners and colleagues alike. 
Cause of Death
According to a statement from her husband, Ken Washington, Stribling passed away peacefully at home on September 26, 2026, following a two-year battle with brain cancer. Her husband and sister, Darlene, were with her.
A celebration of life is expected to take place in Washington, D.C. The date and venue had not been announced in WHUR's September 27 statement. 
Legacy and Remembrance
Angela Stribling's career connected generations of audiences through television, radio, and jazz. Her contributions to BET's early programming and Washington's radio culture established her as a familiar presence in American broadcasting.
Beyond her professional achievements, colleagues remembered her for her generosity, warmth, and encouragement of others. Her influence will remain part of the history of Black broadcasting and the communities she served.
