The family of Tam Hing-man reported him missing on Saturday after losing contact with him, police said. He left his home on Pik Tin Street in Tai Wai that morning and failed to return.
Police, firefighters, the Government Flying Service and Civil Aid Service subsequently mounted a days-long search.
At about 11.30am on Tuesday, rescuers found a man collapsed on a mountain trail in Man Hang, Fo Tan. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the man was understood to be the missing 72-year-old, adding that the cause of death would be determined by a postmortem examination.
On Monday, a member of a hiking group posted an appeal on social media seeking information about a man whose name and age matched the description of the deceased.
