Tokyo in August is not exactly begging you to sit outside. Between the humidity and blazing sunshine, alfresco dining can seem like a test of endurance rather than a leisurely pleasure.
But summer won’t last forever. As temperatures begin to ease, Tokyo’s terraces, courtyards and rooftop gardens are some of the best places in the city to eat and drink. The trick is finding outdoor spots that offer some protection from the sun — whether that means a covered balcony, leafy trees or tables shaded by parasols.
