MARCELLUS, New York — The fire service family across Marcellus, Navarino, and broader Onondaga County is in deep mourning following the passing of Past Chief Thomas "Tom" Lanning, 58, who passed away on Friday, August 21, 2026. His death marks the conclusion of a remarkable 42-year legacy dedicated to public safety, emergency response, and community mentorship.
Four Decades of Volunteer Service and Firehouse Leadership
Lanning began his lifelong commitment to emergency services in 1984 as a junior firefighter with the Navarino Fire Department.In May 1996, he joined the Marcellus Fire Department, steadily advancing through the operational ranks before being appointed Fire Chief in 2009. After concluding his tenure as Chief in Marcellus in 2012, Lanning rejoined the Navarino Fire Department, continuing his active service and mentorship until his passing.In addition to his volunteer fire service, Lanning worked for Onondaga County for over 26 years.Firefighting was deeply ingrained in his family history—following in the footsteps of his father, Harold "Sparky" Lanning, alongside his brother Mike and his two sons, Dylan and Kyle, who carried on the family tradition as firefighters.

Beyond his dedicated public service, Tom enjoyed hunting, spending time outdoors with friends at Riverforest, and cherishing moments with his family.He was predeceased by his mother, Karol Lanning.Calling hours will take place on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Plis Funeral Home (33 North Street, Marcellus, NY).A formal funeral service and burial with department honors will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Pine Ridge Cemetery in Navarino.Memorial contributions may be directed to either the Navarino Fire Department or the Marcellus Fire Department.
