COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus, Ohio community is mourning the heartbreaking passing of Jacob "Jake" Michael McGrew, who died on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at the age of 31. Born on January 28, 1995, Jake was the cherished son of Michael and Patti McGrew.A 2012 graduate of Franklin Heights High School where he played baseball and basketball, Jake was widely known for his infectious warmth, generous spirit, and deep enthusiasm for cooking, sports, and time spent with loved ones.His sudden passing leaves a profound sense of loss among his family, friends, coworkers at CW Freight, and all who knew him.
Devoted Family Member and Cherished Friend
Jake’s greatest joy came from his close relationships with family and friends. He was a devoted brother to Joshua (Brittney) McGrew and an immensely proud, adoring uncle to his niece, Kayleigh, and nephew, Joshua Jr. He is also survived by his grandparents Glenn and Paulette Crabtree; aunts Lisa (Rob) Richards, David (Jan) McGrew, and Stephanie (Steve) Christman; best friend Shane (Alissa) Allen; goddaughter Kylie Allen; as well as numerous loving cousins and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Charles and Janet Allen, as well as close friends Ashani Leigh Pompey and Michael D. Hamilton Jr.
Celebration of Life and Memorial Gathering Announced
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, August 13, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at O. R. Woodyard South Chapel (1346 S. High St., Columbus, OH).Following the chapel service, family and friends will gather for food and refreshments at the American Legion at 3253 S. High Street from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. In honor of Jake's casual and welcoming nature, attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable attire or sports jerseys representing his favorite teams.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a charitable donation to the American Red Cross or giving blood in memory of Jake.
