At a time when extremist rhetoric and social divisions continue to threaten peace in parts of Nigeria and West Africa, religious leaders are taking a united stand for dialogue, coexistence and stability.
Under the patronage of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Muslim World League (MWL) launched its Initiative for Social Peace in West Africa in Abuja, bringing together Muslim and Christian leaders, government officials, parliamentarians and civil society representatives.
The landmark conference, themed “Diversity and Social Peace: Partnership for a Promising Future,” culminated in the adoption of the Abuja Declaration.
The declaration calls for stronger cooperation between governments, religious institutions and civil society, alongside expanded education, training and media initiatives inspired by the Charter of Makkah.
A new Coordinating Body for Religious and Civil Leaders and Institutions in West Africa will also oversee implementation and monitor progress.
Several agreements were signed to strengthen interfaith cooperation, conflict prevention and peacebuilding across Nigeria.

As West Africa confronts growing security and social challenges, the Abuja initiative places collaboration at the heart of the search for a more peaceful and inclusive future.
