Gordon Walter Johncock, the legendary American racing driver and two-time Indianapolis 500 champion, died of natural causes at his home in South Branch, Michigan, on September 28, 2026. He was 90 years old, according to INDYCAR’s official announcement.

Born on August 5, 1936, in Hastings, Michigan, Johncock built a distinguished career in open-wheel racing. He won the Indianapolis 500 in 1973 and 1982, establishing his place among the sport’s celebrated competitors. He also captured the 1976 USAC national championship and recorded 25 victories during his IndyCar career.

His 1982 Indianapolis 500 victory remains especially memorable. Johncock held off Rick Mears in a thrilling finish, winning by just 0.16 seconds, which was then a record-setting margin. His performance became one of the defining moments of his racing career.

Johncock competed at the highest level for decades before eventually stepping away from professional racing. After retirement, he focused on his timber business in Michigan and maintained a quieter life away from the spotlight. His achievements earned him recognition in several motorsports halls of fame.

He is survived by his wife, Sue, his children and stepdaughter, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild. His passing marks the loss of a notable figure in American motorsports.
