At approximately 7:00 p.m., Chicago Police Department officers and emergency medical personnel responded to reports of gunfire and a traffic collision near 74th Street and South Cottage Grove Avenue in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood. Investigators established that Thomas was targeted while at a Citgo gas station at 76th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue when occupants of a black sedan opened fire. Thomas attempted to flee in his black Dodge Challenger while the assailants pursued and continued firing. The pursuit ended when Thomas collided with a utility pole near 74th Street. First responders located Thomas inside the vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds to his back and leg. Paramedics transported him to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.

Detectives with the Chicago Police Department Area 2 Homicide Division have launched an active murder investigation into the fatal shooting and chase.
As of Monday, September 28, 2026, no suspects have been taken into custody, and no arrests have been announced. Investigators confirmed that a funeral procession sticker was visible on the windshield of Thomas's vehicle, indicating he had attended the funeral services for Chicago drill artist BloodHound Q50 earlier that day. Detectives are reviewing commercial surveillance video from the gas station and traffic cameras along Cottage Grove Avenue to trace the suspect vehicle.
