MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota — Prominent Minneapolis trial lawyer, Robins Kaplan LLP partner, and advocate Tara D. Sutton passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at the age of 59 following a brief illness. Born June 4, 1967, Sutton earned her undergraduate degree and her Juris Doctor with honors from the University of Iowa College of Law. She spent her entire 34-year legal career at Robins Kaplan, joining as a summer associate before becoming a leading plaintiffs’ trial lawyer and chairing the firm's National Mass Tort Group. Her career was defined by landmark litigation, including Minnesota’s historic 1998 tobacco settlement, representing the State of Minnesota against JUUL and Altria ($60.5 million settlement), participating in the national opioid litigation on behalf of Tribal Nations ($589 million settlement), and serving on executive committees in national product liability cases such as Depo-Provera, Benicar, and Chantix.
