HB Abels, a respected audio engineer and musician, has died following a serious vehicle crash in Louisville, Kentucky, while he was traveling toward the Louder Than Life music festival.

Abels was involved in a three-vehicle collision on September 18, 2026, while riding in an Uber. His family said he was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and suffered severe injuries.

A fundraiser created for his family described his injuries as including a brain injury and severe chest injuries. The campaign was established to help cover medical expenses, rehabilitation costs and expenses connected to his mother’s stay in Louisville.

Friends and colleagues described Abels as a longtime professional who had spent years building his career as a front-of-house audio engineer. His work placed him around touring musicians and live productions, while he also had experience as a musician himself.

According to friends, Abels had recently received another opportunity to join a tour as a bassist. The new opportunity came during a period when his career was continuing to develop, making the crash an especially difficult moment for those close to him.

The music community rallied around Abels and his family after news of the crash spread. Musicians, bands, friends and professional colleagues shared support while his mother remained focused on his treatment and recovery.
