Longtime Navajo Nation Scholarship Counselor Shirley Tunney Passes Away

TUBA CITY, Arizona — Shirley Tunney, a dedicated Senior Financial Aid Counselor with the Navajo Nation Scholarship Office, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 24, 2026, surrounded by her children and grandchildren in Tuba City, Arizona.

Tunney dedicated more than 27 years of public service to the Navajo Nation, working directly with students across the reservation to navigate financial aid programs and achieve their higher education goals.

Official Status and Funeral Services

Funeral services for Shirley Tunney have been scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 21 Monave Street in Tuba City, Arizona.

A public viewing will take place at 8:00 a.m. DST, followed by funeral services at 9:00 a.m. DST. Interment will follow at Pillow Hill, Arizona, with a reception held back at the church following the graveside service.
