According to reports, the collision occurred around 12:46 p.m. on Monday, September 28, 2026, on southbound State Route 167, north of the State Route 18 interchange.
Authorities reported that Johnston was riding a motorcycle when it collided with a car travelling in the same direction. He was thrown from the motorcycle and died at the scene. Investigators stated that he was wearing a U.S. Department of Transportation-compliant helmet.
The Washington State Patrol identified speed and an improper lane change as contributing factors in the collision. The driver of the car was not injured. Authorities reported that the driver faces a vehicular homicide charge.
The King County Medical Examiner’s Office identified Johnston on September 29, 2026, and listed multiple blunt force injuries as the cause of death.
