Kentucky is grieving the loss of Trooper Hayden Phillips, a Kentucky State Police officer who died after being shot during a traffic stop on Interstate 65 in Warren County on Monday, September 28, 2026.
Phillips was conducting a traffic stop near Smiths Grove when the shooting occurred at approximately 2 p.m., according to authorities. He was assigned to Post 3 in Bowling Green and served as Unit 369.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled, prompting a statewide search and the issuance of a Blue Alert. Louisville Metro Police later arrested 51-year-old Emonnie Branch, of Portland, Tennessee, in Louisville. Authorities announced a murder charge in connection with Phillips’ death.
Phillips had served with the Kentucky State Police since 2023 and previously worked with the Glasgow Police Department. He was also involved in emergency services and community activities before joining the state police.
Beyond his law enforcement duties, Phillips was a husband and father of three sons. His death has left his family, colleagues and community members mourning a man who dedicated his career to public service.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear expressed condolences to the Phillips family, recognizing the trooper’s commitment to protecting the commonwealth. Kentucky State Police leadership also pledged continued support for his loved ones.
