Positano Fire Update: Wildfire Risk Remains High as Crews Monitor Italy’s Amalfi Coast

Fire crews are responding to another wildfire affecting the area between Positano and Vico Equense along Italy’s Amalfi Coast, raising fresh concerns about the region’s vegetation and surrounding communities.

According to Italian news agency ANSA, the fire started on the evening of September 30 near Santa Maria del Castello, an area between the Amalfi Coast and the Sorrento Peninsula. Firefighters, volunteers, and local police were deployed as crews worked to contain the flames. <Cite refs={[“turn114811search0”,“turn114811search1”]}/>

Helicopters have been collecting water from the sea and dropping it over affected areas to help extinguish remaining flames. As of the morning of October 1, the situation allowed crews to continue operations without deploying Canadair firefighting aircraft, according to reports.

The latest incident follows several wildfires that affected parts of the Amalfi Coast and the Sorrento Peninsula during September. Earlier fires damaged vegetation, affected wildlife, and prompted emergency operations in areas around Positano, Amalfi, and Agerola. A previous fire near Positano also contributed to a landslide that temporarily closed part of the SS163 Amalfitana road before it reopened. <Cite refs={[“turn114811search6”,“turn114811search9”,“turn114811search10”]}/>

Environmental group WWF Terre del Tirreno has called for stronger monitoring and prevention measures to reduce the risk of further fires. The cause of the latest blaze has not been officially established, and a final assessment of the damage has not yet been reported.

Residents and visitors should follow local authority announcements for updates on fire operations, access restrictions, and road conditions. The situation remains subject to change as emergency crews continue their work.

Further updates are expected as officials provide more information about containment efforts and the extent of the affected area.
