The Albany, Ohio, community is mourning the passing of Peter Burke Abele, a longtime appellate judge and community leader who died peacefully on September 25, 2026, at the age of 69. According to his obituary, his wife, Kellie, was by his side.


Born on August 7, 1957, Abele graduated from Vinton County High School in 1975. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Bowling Green State University and a law degree from Capital University Law School. His legal career included service as an assistant prosecutor for Vinton County, Athens city prosecutor, and referee in the Athens County Common Pleas Court.

In 1991, Abele took office as a judge on the Ohio Fourth District Court of Appeals. Over the following decades, he became a familiar figure in Ohio's legal community. He also served by appointment on the Ohio Supreme Court and participated in the swearing-in ceremonies for graduating classes of Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers.

Beyond the courtroom, Abele devoted much of his time to youth baseball. A lifelong fan of the sport, he coached local teams for more than 30 years, working with young players from introductory leagues through American Legion baseball. He invested time in helping players develop their skills and build confidence.

His family described him as a person of integrity, honesty, curiosity, humility, and kindness. His intelligence, warm smile, and sense of humor left a lasting impression on colleagues, friends, and the young athletes he mentored.

Abele is survived by his wife, Kellie, his sons, Alex, Chase, and Ash, and his brother, Andy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer E. “Pete” Abele and Addie Abele, and his sister, Terry Smith.

In accordance with his wishes, Abele will be cremated, and the family has stated that no formal services will be held. Those wishing to honor his memory are encouraged to make a heartfelt contribution to others.

Peter Burke Abele leaves behind a legacy of public service, commitment to the law, and years of mentorship through community baseball. His influence will remain with his family, former colleagues, and the many young people he encouraged throughout his life.
