Noll’s family announced his death, with reports at the time stating that he died of natural causes. He had been living in Crescent City, Northern California.

Born in San Diego in 1937 and raised in Manhattan Beach, California, Noll began surfing as a child. He later traveled to Hawaii, where he became known for challenging some of the largest waves at locations including Waimea Bay, Pipeline, and Makaha.

One of the defining moments of his career came during a major swell at Makaha in December 1969. Noll rode an enormous wave that later became one of the most discussed rides in surfing history. The exact size of the wave remained disputed because of limited photographic evidence, but the ride became central to Noll’s legacy.

Beyond surfing, Noll was a surfboard shaper, entrepreneur, filmmaker, and businessman. He established his own surfboard company and helped shape the development of surfboard design during a period of major change in the sport.

Noll eventually stepped away from big-wave surfing but remained involved in the surfboard industry. He later moved to Northern California and worked as a commercial fisherman.

His influence continued long after his competitive surfing years. Noll was inducted into the Surfing Walk of Fame in Huntington Beach in 1996. His career and contributions remain part of the history of American surfing.

Greg Noll is remembered for his role in the development of big-wave surfing, his surfboard designs, and the lasting influence he had on generations of surfers.
