Woman Found Dead at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

ATLANTA, Georgia — Authorities are investigating after a woman was found dead inside a restroom at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport early Thursday morning.

The incident occurred on October 1, 2026, and prompted an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation at the request of the Atlanta Police Department.

According to an official statement released by the GBI, a MARTA Police Department detective noticed a woman walking around the airport at approximately 5 a.m.

Authorities said the woman appeared visibly distressed.

The detective approached her and offered assistance to help her get home. The woman declined that assistance but told the detective that she needed an ambulance.

Emergency medical services were then requested.

Woman Entered Airport Restroom While Waiting for Help

According to investigators, the woman subsequently told the detective that she needed to use a restroom.

The detective directed her to the nearest restroom and remained outside while she entered.

A short time later, another person came out of the restroom and called for the detective to enter.

When the detective went inside, the woman was discovered suffering from multiple apparent self-inflicted stab wounds, according to the GBI.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Woman’s Identity Has Not Been Released

Authorities had not publicly identified the woman as of the latest official update.

This means her name, age and other personal information should not be reported until officials or her family release that information.

Investigators have also not publicly disclosed what may have caused the distress observed before her death.

Autopsy to Determine Official Cause and Manner of Death

The woman’s body was transported to the Clayton County Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy was scheduled.

The examination is expected to help authorities establish the official cause and manner of death.

Although investigators described the injuries as apparently self-inflicted, an official determination regarding the manner of death had not been announced.

For that reason, the incident should not yet be definitively characterized as a suicide unless the medical examiner or another appropriate authority confirms that determination.
