SAN FRANCISCO — Two employees at a local homeless navigation center have been arrested and charged after allegedly helping an armed robbery suspect evade police after he shot a San Francisco police officer, city officials announced Monday, August 24, 2026.
The incident stems from a May 31, 2026 pursuit in San Francisco's Bayview neighborhood, during which the suspect, identified by law enforcement as Norris Reed III, allegedly shot and wounded SFPD Officer Brittany Taylor.
Allegations and Police Video Evidence
According to San Francisco Police Chief Derreck Lew and District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, Reed fled on foot immediately after shooting Officer Taylor and entered a nearby city-funded navigation center.
Surveillance footage and investigation records led to charges against two shelter staff members:
Assisting Evasion: Chief Lew stated that despite recognizing Reed was armed and actively fleeing from law enforcement, employees failed to call 911 and instead assisted him inside.
Providing Disguise & Escape: One employee allegedly lied to arriving officers and misdirected their search. A second employee allegedly provided Reed with a new jacket and hat to alter his appearance before helping him escape out of a window.
Police Reaction: "I watched the video of this, which is stunning. Even after recognizing that this man was armed, as he tried to enter the navigation center, they still assisted him," Chief Lew said during Monday's press conference.
