SAN JOSE, Calif. — A suspect was killed during an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement in San Jose on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, following a violent confrontation that left a San Jose police officer hospitalized with gunshot wounds.
The San Jose Police Department (SJPD) confirmed early Wednesday that the injured officer has since stabilized.
Incident Overview & Investigation Details
Initial Response: Emergency calls first came in shortly after 12:30 p.m. Tuesday reporting an incident in the Goodyear-Mastic neighborhood near the intersection of Lick Avenue and Goodyear Street, adjacent to Caltrain’s Tamien Station.
Gunfire Erupts: Responding officers encountered the armed suspect at the scene.
During the encounter, gunfire was exchanged, resulting in one officer being struck. Suspect Deceased: The suspect was fatally shot by responding officers during the exchange of gunfire and pronounced dead.
The identity of the suspect has not yet been publicly released by authorities. Hospitalization: The wounded officer was transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for emergency treatment.
Mayor Matt Mahan and police command staff responded to the hospital Tuesday evening to monitor the officer's condition.
Multi-Agency Response & Traffic Disruptions
A massive multi-agency emergency response descended on the Tamien Park area Tuesday, with dozens of SJPD patrol units, SWAT personnel, and deputies from the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office assisting at the perimeter.
Investigators closed surrounding roadways near State Route 87 and Lick Avenue through Tuesday night to collect ballistic evidence and map the scene.
