HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — The communities of Davie, Hollywood, and Broward County are mourning the tragic passing of 20-year-old Jovani Anthony Major, affectionately known to family and friends as "Jio." A student at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), Jio passed away on Friday morning, August 7, 2026, following a collision on Interstate 95 in Hollywood, Florida. His unexpected passing has devastated his parents, siblings, fellow classmates, and wide circle of friends, who remember him as a cherished son, brother, grandson, nephew, and loyal companion whose life was cut tragically short.
Florida Highway Patrol Investigates Early-Morning Interstate Accident
According to preliminary details released by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the incident occurred at approximately 4:20 a.m. along the northbound lanes of I-95, just north of West Pembroke Road. Investigators reported that Major moved from the center concrete barrier and attempted to cross the northbound lanes during rainy road conditions when he was struck by a Honda Civic traveling in the express lane. Following the impact, the driver safely pulled over into the general-purpose lanes. Major sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead later that morning at approximately 7:27 a.m.
Fundraiser Established to Assist Family with Expenses
The circumstances surrounding why Major was on the interstate remain under active investigation by state troopers. As the community grieves this loss, a memorial fundraiser has been launched to assist the Major family with funeral costs, medical bills, and final expenses.
