Taraba govt intensifies school monitoring, warns teachers against absenteeism, insubordination

The Taraba state government has intensified monitoring of secondary schools across the state, warning teachers and school administrators against absenteeism, lateness, poor lesson preparation and insubordination.

The monitoring exercise was observed to have been conducted on Tuesday by teams from the Ministry of Secondary, Technical and Vocational Education, led by the Commissioner, Dr. Augustina Godwin; Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Idris A. Goje; and Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Rabi Sunday.

The exercise, according to the commissioner, was aimed at assessing teachers’ attendance, lesson preparation and delivery, students’ academic activities, school administration and compliance with government directives following the resumption of schools.

Reacting to the findings, the commissioner expressed concern over practices capable of undermining effective teaching and learning in the state.

She stressed that teachers were entrusted with the responsibility of shaping the future of Taraba children and must therefore demonstrate commitment, professionalism, discipline and responsibility.

According to her, teachers are expected to be available for their duties, prepare adequately for lessons and respect the authority of school management.

On his part, the Permanent Secretary, Idris Goje, said the Ministry would not allow indiscipline, absenteeism or insubordination to become entrenched in the state’s school system.

Goje noted that the government had continued to commit resources and attention to the education sector, stressing that such efforts should not be undermined by individuals failing to discharge their official responsibilities.

Also speaking, the Secretary of the Ministry, Rabi Sunday, charged school principals to provide effective leadership and ensure that teachers under their supervision complied with established rules and regulations.

She equally urged teachers to respect constituted authority and contribute positively to the administration and academic development of their schools.

Sunday disclosed that observations from the monitoring exercise would be properly documented for follow-up and appropriate administrative action where necessary.

The Commissioner further disclosed that school monitoring would remain a continuous exercise, noting that the Ministry would continue to visit schools across the state to assess compliance, identify challenges and strengthen the delivery of quality education.

She called on teachers, principals and other stakeholders to support the education reforms of governor Agbu Kefas by demonstrating greater commitment to their duties.

The commissioner said the administration was determined to build an education system where teachers are accountable, school administrators responsible and students adequately supported in a disciplined and conducive learning environment.

She urged education personnel to regard their responsibilities not merely as government employment but as a duty to the children and future of Taraba State.

The three monitoring teams were accompanied by directors, deputy directors and quality assurance officers of the Ministry.
