CHARLESTON, West Virginia — The West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance (WVDVA) and state public service leaders are mourning the passing of Steven Craig “Steve” Mooney, Director of Operations for the agency and a highly decorated military veteran.


Mooney completed 23 years of distinguished military service before retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer 3 with the West Virginia Army National Guard and the 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne). His operational deployments included combat and peacekeeping tours in Egypt, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Over his decorated military career, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Mooney was awarded numerous military commendations for tactical leadership and bravery, including the Combat Action Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, and the Meritorious Service Medal.

Following his retirement from active National Guard service, Mooney joined the West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance, rising to the position of Director of Operations.
