According to the Staunton Police Department, the shooting happened at approximately 7:15 p.m. at the Walmart located at 1028-C Richmond Avenue. Gaston was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities later identified the deceased man as Montique T. Gaston. The Staunton police officer involved in the shooting was not injured.
The investigation has been transferred to Virginia State Police. Officials said the case will also be reviewed by a special prosecutor as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
