Tony Canal Obituary: Spanish Actor and Beloved Winnie the Pooh Voice Remembered at 90

Spanish actor and voice artist Tony Canal, whose career spanned more than six decades, has died at the age of 90. Born in Barcelona in 1936, Canal became widely known for playing Father Froilán in the Spanish television series Cuéntame cómo pasó. He also voiced Winnie the Pooh in Spanish-language productions for approximately 20 years, leaving a lasting impression on generations of viewers. The Madrid Dubbing Artists' Union (ADOMA) announced his passing on September 25, 2026. The circumstances surrounding his passing have not been publicly disclosed.

Tony Canal Obituary: Spanish Actor and Beloved Winnie the Pooh Voice Remembered at 90

The Spanish entertainment industry is remembering Tony Canal, a respected actor whose work across television, cinema, theatre and voice acting reached audiences for more than 60 years.

Canal, born Antonio Canal in Barcelona in 1936, developed a long career in Spanish entertainment. He studied dramatic arts at the Institut del Teatre de Barcelona and the Adrià Gual School of Dramatic Arts before moving to Madrid during the 1960s to pursue professional acting.
A memorable role in Cuéntame cómo pasó
One of Canal's most recognisable roles was Father Froilán Cardeñosa in the popular Spanish television drama Cuéntame cómo pasó.
He portrayed the parish priest for many years, appearing in 164 episodes of the long-running RTVE series. His character became a familiar presence in the fictional San Genaro neighbourhood, where the show's central family lived.
The role introduced Canal to a wide television audience and became a defining part of his acting career. 
The Spanish voice of Winnie the Pooh
Beyond his on-screen performances, Canal established a significant career in Spanish-language dubbing.
According to ADOMA, he voiced Winnie the Pooh for approximately 20 years across various television series and films. His warm vocal performances helped bring the beloved Disney character to Spanish-speaking audiences.
His other dubbing credits included the snake Kaa in The Jungle Book 2 and Mayor Adam West in the Spanish version of Family Guy. He also contributed voice performances to productions such as South Park, Charmed and ER. 
A career across television, film and theatre
Canal's professional work extended well beyond his best-known roles. He appeared in more than 30 films and participated in numerous television productions, including Brigada Central, Géminis, El Comisario and Teresa de Jesús.
His theatre work and television appearances reflected the range of his training and experience. Over several decades, he moved between live performance, screen acting and voice work, maintaining a presence across different areas of Spanish entertainment.
