AMARILLO, Texas — The Amarillo community is grieving following a devastating two-vehicle crash on Canyon Drive that claimed the lives of 41-year-old Alma Yazmin Peregrino Rivas and an 8-year-old child.
The fatal collision happened Monday evening near the intersection of SW 45th and Canyon Drive, according to information released by the Amarillo Police Department. Officers responded to the crash shortly after 6 p.m.
Two-Vehicle Collision on Canyon Drive
According to police, the crash involved a Ford pickup occupied by two adults and an 8-year-old child and a GMC SUV.
Investigators said both vehicles were traveling north on Canyon Drive when the driver of the Ford changed lanes and collided with the GMC.
The impact caused the GMC to crash into the center concrete median before losing control and coming to a stop in the grassy median.
The Ford also lost control and rolled over. Police said the three people inside the pickup were thrown from the vehicle during the crash.

Police identified 41-year-old Alma Yazmin Peregrino Rivas as one of the people who died in the crash.
According to authorities, Peregrino Rivas was pronounced dead at the scene.
